Today’s Stuff Wednesday Feb 20 2008
Feb 20th, 2008 by Mark
It’s a big day folks. DAs tell researchers to get stuffed. Bob Geldof blasts media for not noticing that Bush has dumped Billions of dollars in Africa. TV goes to a year ’round schedule. Cities going Bankrupt in California. Santa Monica — sadly not bankrupt yet — is now attacking business, again. Unions demand that Union goons be allowed to tell Doctors how to Doctor — it’s Hillary-Care just not called that — on the public dime.
DAs refuse to spill guts on Death Penalty
DAs refuse to answer Professors questionnaire on how they choose cases for the death penalty. Once again the LAT is squawking about sentencing. Seems to be a theme these days.
In a report to the California Commission on the Fair Administration of Justice, which is examining how the death penalty is applied in California, Pepperdine law school professors Harry M. Caldwell, Carol Chase and Christine Goodman said only 14 of the state’s 58 counties agreed to provide detailed answers to questions about the selection process.
Then the Professors stinging from the rejection of the DAs decided to make an irresponsible statement.
The professors said they believed that those offices “acted in concert in deciding to refuse participation” and expressed dismay at the lack of candor.
So you bash their — in your mind — irresponsible behavior by acting like a child and lashing out. Good thing you teach law.
Totten said in an interview Tuesday that the decision came on the advice of the California attorney general’s office, which defends death sentences on appeal in state and federal courts. The office warned that revealing how capital defendants are chosen could threaten not a particular case, but rather constitutional challenges filed in “almost all” death penalty cases.
Or maybe it’s not a good thing they teach law.
Along the same line, Susan Everingham, a criminal justice researcher with the Rand Corp., said her attempts to gather meaningful information on the costs of the death penalty in California had been frustrated. Attorneys for prosecutors and the defense don’t keep track of the hours they spend on particular cases, and reconstructing the data would be costly, she said.
Cities going bankrupt and these people want our overworked prosecutors to waste time answering their questions. That is what we have elections for.
Geldof sides with Bush
Bob Geldof says Bush did more for Africa than any other American Prez. There goes his membership in the ‘do-gooders’ club.
Mr. Geldof praised Mr. Bush for his work in delivering billions to fight disease and poverty in Africa, and blasted the U.S. press for ignoring the achievement.
Mr. Bush, said Mr. Geldof, “has done more than any other president so far.”
“This is the triumph of American policy really,” he said. “It was probably unexpected of the man. It was expected of the nation, but not of the man, but both rose to the occasion.”
“What’s in it for [Mr. Bush]? Absolutely nothing,” Mr. Geldof said.
Oh yeah, Bob just bought himself a one way ticket to the exit with liberals. Just more proof that the American Media is crooked and biased.
TV to be year ’round
Oh joy. Getting ready for the ‘endless season’ on TV. No more Fall build up, now it ’s year round new stuff. Not sure this will last.
After months of speculation, NBC confirmed on Tuesday that it would sidestep the annual star-studded “upfront” presentation for advertisers and hold a series of client meetings with media buyers instead.
Perhaps more important for television viewers, the network said it would embrace a year-round prime-time programming schedule, jettisoning the frequently criticized practice of saving most shows for the traditional September- to-May television season.
For several years, the broadcast networks have gradually replaced repeats during the summer and winter months with some new shows, mostly of the unscripted form. NBC’s announcement appears to be a more dramatic step in that direction. The network is already preparing several shows for the summer months, including a second season of “American Gladiators” and a broadcast version of the singing competition “Nashville Star.”
No offense to those shows, they are not really ‘prime time’ stuff. However most “prime time” shows aren’t either.
More crap, big deal. Or are the networks actually having to compete, and behave like a real business?
The fourth quarter is often the most important of the year for many marketers like retailers and auto makers, Mr. DeWitt noted, but under the current system many of the broadcast shows they are offered from October through December are new and untried.
If more shows are brought out earlier in the calendar year, he said, “you’d have a track record of their performance.”
“We’d have more reliable rating information,” he added, “so we won’t be going into the fourth quarter blind.”
A 52-week broadcast schedule may make it more difficult to track the hits and flops, Mr. DeWitt said, but “it’s the way of the world today; things move faster and we all have to keep up.”
Translation, we are getting our heads handed to us by our competition and the buyers are tired of paying good money for our garbage.
This is all the brainchild of Jeff Zucker who has all but destroyed NBC.
Bankrupt City
Vallejo California is on the brink of declaring bankruptcy. More proof you can’t trust the government. San Diego had best listen up. Hell, liberals need to listen up. They won’t of course.
“This has been happening for quite a while. For 15 years the city council has been putting Band-Aids on the problem. (It has been) extending contracts and deferring payments for public safety to the next years as a way of balancing the current budget.”
Public safety contracts for police and fire services make up 80 percent of the city’s general fund.
“We’ve been spending more than we’ve been making for 20 years and it’s time to pay the piper,” [city council member Stephanie] Gomes said.
They won’t be the last.
Santa Monica not bankrupt, sadly
Santa Monica is however home of the endless stupidity. Now they want to ban “single use plastic bags”. No really, they do.
The Santa Monica City Council delayed action late Tuesday on the drafting of an ordinance that would ban “single-use” plastic carry-out bags at all stores and restaurants within the city and would require retailers to charge a fee for paper bags.
Drive more businesses out of California, why don’t you?
“This is the farthest-reaching bag ban in the United States, if not the world,” said Mark Gold, president of Heal the Bay. “It’s a bold move by Santa Monica that . . . we hope serves as a model for California and beyond.” Gold said Malibu, Los Angeles and Long Beach were watching Santa Monica’s actions.
It’s a stupid move, and nothing but grand standing by radicals.
This month, a ban on the use of non-recyclable packaging for takeout food and beverages took effect in Santa Monica. Both that ordinance and the plastic bag ordinance were recommended by Dean Kubani, the city’s manager of environmental programs.
Oh he is making a name for himself. However not to be outdone is the globe trotting fossil fuel burning nitwit who missed the vote because …
Councilwoman Pam O’Connor did not attend the meeting because she was attending an environmental conference in Australia
Un. Real.
Reform? Not if Union Thugs have a say
The DWP in LA is going to continue providing “lactation services” for 50 women. It’s not a joke.
About 50 stern-faced mothers who work at the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power confronted the agency’s board Tuesday and won the ability to keep using lactation services provided as a benefit of employment.
Tell me again how the liberals will make things all better. Please.
Some members of the group, organized by their union, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 18, lined the boardroom holding signs that read: “Mayor Villaraigosa’s appointee: Nick Patsaouras is anti-women.”
That’s a Union for you.
How stupid are Union employees?
Sarah Perez, 35, who works in the DWP’s environmental services division, described how helpful the specialist was to her and added that since returning from her five-month maternity leave, she has missed only four days of work to care for her 19-month-old, Joaquin. “He is healthy because he was breast-fed,” Perez said after her testimony.
They have to be taught how to breast feed. Oh yea, and they are “electricians”. Great. What’s really sad is that this women is just another pawn of the Union. This program is typical of the bullcrap that Unions and their co-conspirators the Democrats.
Also appearing before the board was Jodel Navarro, a supervisor in the DWP’s print shop. In an interview before she spoke, she said: “My son was a 1.5-pound, four-month preemie who was supposed to die. But the specialist told me to force Kaiser to take him out of the incubator and let me breast-feed him. The doctor swears that is why he’s alive. Johnny’s now 13.”
Wow, are these people this stupid? That’s what we need people who are not Doctors telling Doctors what to do. Oh wait that is Hillary-Care.
