Lindbergh Radar Failed
Feb 15th, 2008 by Mark
Here we go again. Lindbergh field had to divert flights due to a “radio” failure. Does it sound familiar to you? It did to me: ATC radio outage grounds LAX in 2004. Then last year the ATC had to use personal cell phones to clear traffic over 8 states. Not to worry, it’s being worked on; oh no it’s not being worked on. Well they used the best equipment they can find, don’t they? Not really seems that Microsoft Windows is downing the ATC as much as human error. It’s safe from attacks, right? Not really. Seems that the US ATC system vulnerable to attacks. Nice. Oh and if you want to move to the UK, think again. The UK had it’s own radio outage in 2004.
How many people are going to have to die before we get a system that works.
The Union has of course declared a staffing emergency. That’s not very reliable, that could only mean they need more money from dues. The problem is that the government is not taking care of business. They are too busy investigating drug use so they can get autographs from Roger Clemens.
Previously on the Island
- Lindbergh Field Shut Down
- No,it’s not the same LAX story
- Here We Go Again part 1 million and 3
- Getting to be a habit
- Airline computers go down again
- San Diego Security
- SoCal Airports Down
- What is up with the airports
It’s sad that there are so man stories like this. The government does not seem to care.

Considering that membership in NATCA is not a mandatory condition of employment, your statement isn’t entirely correct.
Not all new hires join the union just like not all veteran controllers are members of the union.
You would be foolish to think that ATCs would not join. Anyone who has been a non-union employee in a Union shop knows the hate and vitriol that is lobbed at you for not joining. Basically Unions are shake down artists, and they are good at it.
Even if you choose not to join, the Union will get more members as they will recruit heavily for the position.
