Bad news: the Witch and Poomacha fires have merged. All rail service is down due to the Pendleton fires. Palomar mountain, and Deluz have been ordered evacuated.
Last night we had some power issues. SDG&E lost the mains coming from San Onofre. Some are back on. The air is thick with ash, and breathing is difficult. The sun is at least out today. Looks almost normal. Almost.
The winds have died down, so it’s not as hot. It also means the ashes are not being removed from the air. Moisture is returning to the air, sinuses and nose are still bone dry. I have started spraying water in the air in our home to get a little more moisture. Since we live on the beach, we don’t have an air conditioner. I have a Vornado fan that is keeping the air moving along with the air handler that is cleaning out most of the crap in the air. It’s comfortable. Once the winds start to blow the ash out, we can open the windows.
One Million have been ordered out of homes. No place to go, though. My escape would have been on the 5. That’s useless. Looks like the beach or the Marina are the way to go. My friends keep asking why I won’t leave. Simple, no way out. Even though our area is not being evacuated, it’s pinned in by two fires.
The 5 northbound is at a standstill (the southbound lanes have been reopened — why I have no idea). There is a fire at the Border checkpoint (it’s in Orange County — you would think they would be doing useful things instead of blocking traffic) just north of Camp Pendleton. Avoid it people. This road was the only way out for me, other than a boat from the marina.
Speaking of boats. The Navy is requesting that all DOD personnel come to the bases for shelter. This will allow the DOD to take care of it’s own, relieving the county an city of the duty. They can then assign the DOD personnel to assist other agencies or on Base. Navy Base Coronado, Navy Base San Diego all have space and rations available. Good job Navy!
So far the mainstream media is completely ignoring the failure of CALFIRE. Seems no one cares, they only want to blame Bush. Tired of Bush bashing, and I am not at all happy with him. Would be nice if they covered the failure of the liberal/union agencies that are causing death and destruction.
The constant comparing of the fires to Katrina, and the desperate attempts to make it sound like Bush is behaving differently than he did before is wearing thin. I am growing weary of the political agenda of the media dictating the news coverage instead of the news dictating the news. We don’t need your opinion of how it’s going, liberals. We can do a post-mortem later. Cover the news, jackasses.
Ahnold was having to defend the fire fighting last night to a reporter (broadcast on CNN), however she seemed more interested in appearing to attack and be tough than actually getting some news. Ahnold seemed more interested in appearing to do a good job than of actually leading. He is such an incompetent jackass. I hope all the “Bear Flag League” members are happy now. Maybe next time you will fight for a Conservative instead of an “elect-able” candidate.
Several places around the country are sending crews and equipment. Thank you.

Here is a small movie of the satellite view of the west coast.
Here is an image direct from NASA, and the latest sat image of the smoke (I cropped it a bit)
The yellow arrow is the wind direction. There should have been a 2d star north of #2 that would be Malibu. You can see the smoke (small plumes) going over the Channel Islands.
