UPDATE: See below
San Diego’s Lindbergh field is having another screening “crisis”.
One flight is cancelled, and several delayed.
July 18, 2007 (12:11 PM) — Passengers at Lindbergh Field were re-screened after a piece of luggage being checked was discovered with an unknown liquid and electronic components. Several flights were delayed Wednesday morning, but most flights were back on schedule as of early afternoon. Travelers were advised to call the airport to check on their flight status.
The CARRY ON bag contained shoes that had “electronic components” attached, and a “unknown liquid substance” in the bag.
TSA lost control of the bag and the passenger. They couldn’t find the passenger to whom the bag belonged, and they have lost the bag. At noon it appears they are still clueless, even after reviewing the CCTV footage.
The TSA is blaming a medical emergency, and the passenger for the foul-up. You think maybe this was a test? Timing seems a little odd. Why the loss of control at the check points if the medical emergency was in the air?
KFMB has video (go to NEWS 8 VIDEO and select the story on the left). Yes, I know it’s idiotic to use the flash player and not have link, but it’s all that is available. UPDATE: new link for channel 8 video and story.
UPDATE
Rocket scientists keeping San Diego Secure
SAN DIEGO – At least 20 flights were delayed at Lindbergh Field Wednesday morning because of a security breach at Terminal 2 west.
The terminal was closed at 9 a.m. and was reopened about two hours later but several flights were held from taking off and landing, airport spokeswoman Sharie Shipley said.
Nice job, aces.
He said authorities at the airport offered no explanation as to what was going on but that for the most part people seemed to be taking the delays in stride.
Of course they took it in stride, we citizens are used to the incompetents at the airport.
Still no word on why they could not get this guy on the CCTV.
Crime at airports is still high despite the heightened security. Hmmm.
(July 18, 2007 @ 1805 PDT) KUSI is finally reporting on the terror targets and why we should have had more money for Homeland security. San Diego is home to the largest collection of military assets in the country. They didn’t make the connection between the airport and the possible terrorist actions.
Michelle Malkin has some comments on the debacle
Why San Diego Matters
Navy, Marines, port of entry.

Red numbers are points of security. Blue line is flight path. Note that the airport has only one set of runways. All aircraft land in on the blue line, and depart out the other end of the airport. All airlines travel out over the ocean, and then turn back to their flight path over the US (if heading to a US destination inland).
- SAN - Lindbergh Airport aka San Diego International Airport
- USMC Recruit Depot - nothing like wiping out an entire recruit class
- USN Training Ctr - closed in 1997. currently “managed” by the city of San Diego. It has become a model of city in-efficiency. Strictly symbolic attack.
- NAS North Island - Part of Naval Base Coronado. It houses much of the Pacific fleet.

- USCG base - the coast guard here shares the runways with commercial traffic. They actually have to push their aircraft across the road (that leads into the airport) onto the airport runways. The USCG is responsible for interdiction of drugs, people, waterways management, water borne vessel inspection, rescues at sea, responds to hazardous material issues, and oil spills. Oh and they are considered an integral part of homeland security, such as it is.
Very tasty targets in deed.
This also points out why the border at San Ysidro.
Within 2 hours you can cross the border and be at one of the most sensitive bases on the planet, and 5 airports. Oh and see that green part at the bottom left? Favorite place to cross, lots of cover.
